Hi there,
I am a new owner of the samsung brightside, with the verizon provider. I was wondering if there was any way for me to use the internet and e-mail functions of this phone in wifi spots without having a data plan or having to purchasing such features from verizon. If this is possible, I would appreciate it if you could help me go about it.

...use a smart phone, you have to have a data plan, even if you only want to use a wifi connection. Been this way for over 2 years. No exceptions.
It's a feature phone, not a smartphone

Verizon did not include a wifi radio for use on wifi hotspots, only 3G for use on their data networks. Yes, you could buy the phone outright (from Amazon, etc.), but you wouldn't be able to activate it on Verizon's voice service w/o the required data plan.
The iPod touch is a different beast with more capabilities. Buy that, along with a cheap Verizon flip phone and you'll be a happier person

After further research, the Brightside is not considered a "smartphone", it is considered a "messaging" phone aka a "feature" phone. It does not require a data feature is I previously suggested. Sorry for my mistake. I did not attempt to mislead the OP since I thought it was a "smartphone".
