Options for playing MP3's on Droid in car?

One of the main reasons I have wanted an iPhone is the ability of so many car stereos to connect to iPhones/iPods and control the music directly from the stereo. I also like how the digital data is passed directly to the stereo and the DAC happens in the car stereo, along with any volume adjustments.
Right now I use another brand of MP3 player in my car, connected from the headphone jack to the mini-jack Aux input on the car stereo. I have to turn the volume all the way up to max on the player, is not a true line-out signal, and is of course an analog signal (DAC occurs in the player itself, amplified by the player, and amplified again by the stereo).
My wife and I are considering Droid phones, and I was wondering what options there are for connecting this phone to a car stereo. Anything that would allow for control on the stereo and/or would pass a digital signal through? I know some newer car stereos have USB inputs, and I would certainly be willing to upgrade to a new stereo along with the Droid if that's what it would take.
