You CAN win this game ...
Why even bother with Verizon? Super high prices, lousy customer (so-called) service (talk to 3 different reps, get 5 different stories, depending on what day it is and the phase of the moon), forced data plan. Here's what you do: think OUTSIDE of the box and beat them at their own game. I was paying $70 a month w/a forced data plan. They forced my hand with an issue that has nothing to do with this forum so I won't go into it, as it's a loooong story, but it's the usual Verizon nonsense. Go to Amazon, buy an unlocked Android phone (the one I bought in August was about $125)(LG Optimus GT540) with wi-fi. Find yourself a decent cell phone provider (in my case, Pure Talk, who has no contracts) which starts at $10 for 101 minutes every month, and the minutes roll over as long as you make your monthly payments. Get a free SIM card from them. Slip it into your phone. ALSO, and this is just as important, download GrooVe IP from the Android Market - and set your settings on your phone so that every time you dial a number, it asks you whether you want to use your minutes or talk over Wi-fi. Voila! Not only do you have voice without minutes, but you have minutes to use at a decent price when you're not able to be around Wi-Fi. And the other good thing about Pure Talk is that they are based here in the United States and their customer service is too. It's so simple that it doesn't seem possible, does it? But here I am, paying $10 - $20 a month for the same or better service than I ever got from Verizon (by the way, Pure Talk uses AT&T's network, so they're nationwide pretty much), and saving about $55 a month! There are no roaming charges, either. They do charge more for international calls, but since I don't make those it doesn't concern me. I'm sure Verizon does too. So remember: Unlocked Android phone w/Wi-Fi, Pure Talk minutes, GrooVe IP from the Android Market = BIG SAVINGS. You'll feel really good when you do this, because not only are you giving the Big Bloat cell phone companies the finger, but you are in charge of your own cell phone destiny. And if you know how to root your Android phone - well, the possibilities are endless, aren't they? Have fun!
Oh, one more thing - don't forget about Google Voice when you're trying to conserve your cell phone minutes, they sure come in handy ....
