Can I send a text message to a 5-digit "text" number via the web?

If I want to send a text message to the local radio station at their number (say 55555), but don't want to use my phone... can I do it?

I tried via Yahoo! mail where I can send SMS messages to phone numbers, but it won't take the 'short' number. (A regular phone # has 10 digits, the # provided only has 5 digits... yet works from a phone...)

How does this stuff work anyway...?

that most of such special numbers aren't free to send to. They'll send something back and charge you for that. Like voting for a competition on TV or receiving your daily horoscope. When sending from a non-regular phone that scheme won't work, and it's quite understandable such numbers are excluded by the Yahoo! software.

If you want to stay anonymous better buy a pay-as-you-go card and a suitable phone for the purpose.

This website allows it, along with 4 digit, 6 digit, or standard 10 digit numbers.
