Nokia have been making the best cell phones since the stone age, before even wiring and electricity were invented. The models I have owned were all superb, in their design and usability and in the sturdiness. The Nokia 3330, and more recently the 1101, which I have both owned, are just about the sturdiest phones ever created. Both took a fall of more than 5 metres and didn't break or anything. This, amongst other incidents, such as sliding down the stairs, being drowned in a spilled glass of water or soft drink, and many more. Now my current phone is the Nokia N95. It is by far the best thing ever created. It outdoes all the other manufacturers. The iPhone, which is under the spotlight at this time, does not even begin to match up with it. The N95, and the other N Series devices, together with all the nokia phones and devices, are extremely good. Nokia, in my opinion is followed by Sony Ericsson, who also create good phones.
I have heard also that samsung are not bad too. Motorola seem to have stuck on the RAZR phone style, and the V3x which I owned is not that good. Maybe it was only mine but it was very slow and non user friendly. So, Nokia gets the title for best phones and devices, and with reason.
As for carriers, these days it's hard to tell. Locally (in Malta, that is) Vodafone aren't too good. 3G reception is very poor and only works on an extremely small percentage of the islands. The roaming rates and everything is very highly priced. Their only competitor, Go Mobile, is maybe better, in what I see. 3G reception is good even in deserted, uninhabited parts of the island, and they have many offers such as free video calling and so on. In Malta we do not get the best deals. For example compared to Italy, where everyhing is free (if you buy a line, you get a free phone, hours of free talk time, freee video calling, free smss and mmss, etc. It is literally free. At one time I remember an offer giving 20Mbps internet through the cellular connection, which is much faster than my cable broadband connection, which I pay for!) As for other countries I cannot tell, because I am not quite up to date.
