Cell phones forum: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone?

Oh it may be a couple of years, I either have to get rich quick or the price has to drop down to about 150$

Seems to me that Apple has a great product but for me there's a little hesitation about the coolness factor long term. I've bought things that were cool before, only to stop using soon after. I know a phone is different but Im betting Id use the phone and the features more like a regular phone now, and think about how much money I am spending thru that whole 2 year term. Any other phone is a totally different category as far as expenses and the way you use it, and not worry about it etc. This one is like having an expensive vase everywhere you go. Because its a phone, you will have to carry it. How many of you carry the normal Ipod Video everyday everywhere you go. That in comparison is not even half as expensive. Anyway, I use my work cell phone for personal calls. So I dont even pay for a cell phone. Im sure if I was in sales or some job where I needed lots of contacts at hand and on the go, and I could use that flashy phone as a conversation piece then yeah, but I dont think so. Maybe after 6 months if the price comes down. I doubt that will happen though. Id love to win one though. CNET, have a contest for all commenters, give away an IPHONE.

2 - $500/$600 for an iPod, a good phone and a decent internet tools with a great user interface is not a lot of money. I already have it on my birthday list (in about a month)
3) I'm already an AT&T customer with a $39 plan so a 59 plan is not going to break the bank
4) It's been semi-officially confirmed that it will handle Exchange server mail, so I can retire my 2 year old smartphone

Although I don't know a great deal about this device, and I am a Mac user, I don't need a cell phone or iphone. I see too many people driving and walking down the street who are slaves to such devices, causing me to shake my head in disbelief. For me, I have better ways to spend my time and money.

I'd like an iPhone. I have no problems with ATT as they're my current provider and even without 3G, I get pretty fast Internet access even if it is WAP. However, the iPhone is still a very pricey item. If Apple iPod history is any judge subsequent models will have more memory, more applications, and cost less. So, I'll wait. Some rumors have floated that sincce the device is essentially a display screen for software that the actual hardware won't really be outdated with the addition of subsequent software updates. If that's true, then the first wave of adapters will do well. If not, they may have iEnvy when the next model with 3G, longer battery life, etc. hits the market. I'll wait.

It seems to be terrific and has gotten good reviews, but anything new has kinks - remember Office XP? Vista? VHS vs. Beta? I never buy anything newly introduced, from cameras to cars. In addition, I am too miserly to pay to get out of my current cell phone contract. Many things need to happen - my contract needs to expire, iPhone needs to be made available to other providers, the cost has to come down so that us mere earthlings can afford to buy one. Then I'll look at current reviews (probably a year from now) and decide.

Heard too much about lousy voice quality and, also if your computer goes down or you have a power outage you're just plain out-a-luck.

Beyond the fact this is a Gen1 device offered from a company with ZERO track record providing this sort of service...on what planet does it make sense to anyone other then the mind-numb'd Apple evangelists? I'll use the tools that make sense but will question any product for actually providing the functionality I desire as well as what is the true cost of owning and using the device. Apple positions these products to cater to those who feel smug about simply owning them and somehow derive their sense of self-worth from that "ownership"...even if it costs them $200/mo for life and the device that cost $600+ lasts maybe 2-years before it needs replaced.

There is not a chance I will plop down 600-bones on what is essentially nothing but a phone. Sure it has some bells & whistles but for that cash I can buy a 17" Quad-core laptop in 6-months...and can buy a dual core NOW.

Even a PocketPC has to be a better deal then an iPhone.

When will this obsession with over-priced devices that serve only to push ads to spend even more products end? And they want you to PAY for that "privilege" too boot. Why have people around the world become slaves to these companies? They say if you do not have this you are somehow sub-human...

Somewhere people need to sit up and realize that these devices, like the concept of leasing a car, cost you years of extra work in terms of retirement. Every $1000 extra you spend on junk like this costs you a good 6-months additional work before you can retire. Sounds trite but it's true.

Have lived without using a cell for over 10-years now...and never missed it a bit. See no reason to "need" an iPhone...

slow down and simplify...life is very possible w/o every gadget that is designed simply to empty your bank account...and it's still very fun!

My problem is not the iPhone itself but the carrier. I live in Northern Virginia and I have been a cingular/AT&T subscriber for the past 4 years. Reception was not very good in this area but it was ok. I liked Cingular because of GSM. It is very convenient for me as I travel to Europe and Asia often and I was satisfied with Cingular customer service. However since the beginning of this year as Cingular turned into AT&T, I noticed a net deterioration in coverage to the point now that I cannot receive ot make a phone call through more than half of the area. In many other places where reception was good, it has now become spotty. The worse case is that there is no consistency in the coverage. You may get a strong reception at one point but when you walk 5 yards away you lose it completely. And if you come back to the same spot an hour later, you may not get any reception at all. So why buy a sophisticated piece of equipment such as the iPhone when I will nt be able to use it.

Sure I like the touchscreen (I've got it on my camera and I love it), but 2mp camera? Come on! My Nokia 6233 has that already, and it costs a lot less.
It is too costly.

Maybe in time I will see more benefits of it, but until then I am slightly intrigued but not interested.

Apple has not given out sufficient technical data and assurances.

OK, I'm not going to throw one out if it was won or a gift, but I'd think long and hard about keeping it. The reason is the high cost of the monthly service. It's outrageous! Now if the iPhone came with digital cable service (along with everything else) I'd say it was an OK deal. It's to much, way to much. The price of the unit is about what I expected, but it will come down. Together they're a death warrant in my house. If no one buys them at this high price, they'll cut it down until we do. This is another cool item that they think they can make a killing on. If they lowered it to about $200 with service at $30, I'd look into a third job. OK. I wouldn't, but it would be nice. Where is this money gonna come from? Drug dealers, rich parents and theives?

I cant get an iphone because I live in canada and we dont have alaint and we don't live in igloo's!!!!! LOL I really want a iphone though.

I love my gadgets and got loads of them including a Nokia 9500, Blackberry 8800, Archos 504, Garmin Quest etc. Last year I bought my son an iPod and the mayhem the bloody thing caused due to all the restrictions. It can only be connected to one PC, songs are restricted. It doen't record video etc.. etc.. etc.. My first study of the iPhone seems to provide me with a similar view of the iPhone. Lots of things it won't let you do.

There are a lot of great ideas in the iPhone, so maybe when Nokia or Archos release a similar device I will go for it, but not before

No, never.I don't have a cellphone, I don't need one.
If ever I do, it certainly won't be an overhyped, do everything but make a cup of tea model.
