Cell phones forum: Poll: Are you planning on buying an iPhone?

No, I will not but it, because of the restriction, not a sim card phone. Most stupid decision is not selling it independtly and make them CDMA or Sim capability.

I just got my current phone last october so I need to wear it out first. So more than half the Cnet readers won;t buy one. Big deal show me the phone that has even a quarter of the market. Suggesting a product will be a flop or even that Steve Jobs' RDF is in effect because the thing won;t gain 50 percent market share is ridiculous.

ppl already view whole movies and TV series on their 1" to 2" ipod screens. Some ppl go crazy with emails on their BB's and internet on their cellphones. For most of us, it woulnd't be justified spending the $$ for an iphone and its data plan. For others..... if u do business travel at least 30% of the time each month, u own't hav the "luxury" of waiting to go home/office to check your email.

As far something we don't need.... TOTALLY. But then again, ppl can make the same arguments about PDAs, cellphones, GPS devices, and satelite radio. Granted some of these things are not as pricey as the iphone, but stuff like BBs with data plans, and more expensive models of these types of electronic devices ARE and could've been downgraded to save $$

So many people claim they do not want an at&t phone and dont want to wait for 5 years. Does no one read the fine print? The exclusive contract to the iPhone with at&t is only 6 months. It is the plan that at&t has the 5 year agreement with. Also for those claiming GSM phones are just as fast as EVDO phones, yes you are right. However, GSM phones have hit their ceiling, meaning they can not go much further with speed. On the flip side, EVDO have just begun to expand the technology. In a couple of years EVDO technology will be approaching speeds of true broadband, not the "neck breaking" dial-up speeds PDAs have now. Now as for purchasing the iPhone, I wont purchase the phone through at&t, but will purchase it when it comes up with Verizon or Sprint, mainly for the purposes of testing the technology.

AT&T,
Requires a two year contract, supposedly because they are subsidizing the sale, which is not the case? AT&T, will eat its users up on time charges, so we prefer to wait & see.

I may woudl consider it, but as long as it's only released to AT&T/Cingular....NO! That's the biggest drawback to me. If ever it goes to Verizon...then maybe...big maybe

I'm pretty sure it's one of Apple's already-backfired plans of increasing sales for Cingular. If Apple makes the Iphone so exclusive that you MUST have Cingular to get your hands on one, then maybe the sales would increase from all of the gadget lovers. This backfired however, because their are millions of people who refuse to switch for one reason or another. If this, along with its huge price and several noteworthy bugs aren't corrected, the Iphone will fall to knees and will be out-competed by cheaper phones LONG before the Christmas season!

I regret to say that I am with AT&T not by my own choosing but out of necessity. We, my wife and I each have a phone and only use it to keep up with our busy schedules. Are you coming home for lunch? Or are you picking up the granddaughter from school, softball practice, etc. We talk using good old American English not stupid :|> or c u u t. In AE I would say "Can you understand this?"

I need a phone to communicate. Every 2 or 3 years I need to replace my phone because it dies, or the service plan is outdated, or it is damaged, or stolen. I also work in a place where cameras are forbidden, including those in phones. Therefore I buy the simplest phone I can find and I own a separate iPod and a separate PDA (a Sony PEG-T615C - why upgrade when it does it's core functions so well?).
If I want to watch TV, I go home and watch the big screen. If I want to surf the Internet, I use a computer with a full size keyboard and monitor. Any cell phone these days can be used to Google a business or exchange text messages, so the minimum is pretty functional.
Carrying expensive toys around is inviting heartache.

I do not have a Mac
I respect Apple/Jobs
It/He sets the bar high for innovation
BUT,
IPhone is too hyped - I can wait
First generation tech scares me

Do I hear monopoly? Do I hear monopoly? I'm sorry, I must have stuttered.MS gets beat up and yet we have Apple with their monopolies and deals? Google with their monopolies and deals? And then we have Microsoft who could not even dream of doing something like an I-Phone without Google, Adobe, Apple or someone else trying to invoke the Federal mandate. Free enterprise? How about protection for whinners so they can stay in business? Therefore, I will NEVER buy Apple. And as far as Safari browser goes-big deal, I will keep my IE. Unfair competition and protection.

I am excited about the hype, however, with Edge versus 3G, that makes it a show stopper. For the cost of hardware approaching $600 dollars, I would expect the highest internet connection speed available. The annnual service charges approaching $1000 seem out of line with current market pricing. I'm now willing to wait for market reviews. I will stay with my Tunes device and my Blackjack.

1. You can't insert your own SIM card, even if it's an ATT sim card.
2. It's still running off EDGE, not the faster 3G.
3. No removable battey.
4. $$$$$$$$$$$$
5. I need a more business type smartphone that is compatible with MS Outlook.
6. Need 'real' QWERTY keyboard.
7. I feel better off with a 'dedicated' IPOD and seperate Smartphone.
8. From what I read...700MB of either the 4 or 8GB is dedicated to the iPhone OS. So you don't get the entire space for user files.

Those are my two cents....OK...go ahead and call me an Apple hater, but I just dont see this taking over the industry the same way the iPod did over MP3 players.

Seriously, I can't see myself owning one... certainly not as long as it's the cool, trendsetter phone - I'd seem like a wannabe.
I shouldn't say NEVER, but can't imagine why I'd ever want one. Maybe by the 3rd or 4th gen, there will be a reason.

I won't buy it for the same reason I won't buy an iPod - it can't play any of the music I've already purchased in WMA format, and it can't play the music I download from Napster to Go. I'll only buy an Apple product if they agree on some kind of common standard for file format and DRM - otherwise, I'm sticking with the vast majority of players and music downloads that interoperate with each other.
