WAP, Edge, GPRS and mobile service packages

Hi All- I recently purchased an unlocked qtek 8310 and an in the learning curve to access all of its features. My current service provider is T-Mobile with whom I have a package that includes 2 MB of data service.

Can someone direct me to a discussion of Wireless application protocol? As I understand this term, it refers to optimizing web pages to be best viewed on a smaller smartphone screen. I keep seeing references to difficulties in setting this up. What do I need to know to do this?

Also, can someone detail the benefits of Edge vs. GPRS? Does one eat up a data package faster than the other? Is one more readily available than the other? I live in a major metropolitan area that I am pretty sure has both. If I have the option of making one or the other the default connection, which should it be and why?

Thanks so much for any help or observations. I've not been able to find the answers I need to make good decisions on what to choose.

I can't answer your question regarding WAP, though I checked the specs for the Qtek 8310 and it indicates you having Pocket Internet Explorer as your browser. I use the mini-Opera browser for Java on my SE S710a, and it renders most pages just fine. Have you just tried using Pocket IE yet? You may not have problems in viewing things.

EDGE is faster than GPRS for downloads. Think in terms that websites are things to be downloaded to your PPC, not just passively viewed, so yes, EDGE will eat up a data package faster from that standpoint of time. Cost in megabytes will be the same either way, just that if you have EDGE you will spend less time drumming your fingers on the table. I value my personal time somewhat highly, and would recommend using EDGE as your default. If there's no EDGE support, you get the GPRS speeds at worst.

Two recommendations: Unless you really really have things you need to see on the Web, avoid using your Qtek for surfing (the display being slower, smaller, and harder to read than any recently-made PC); and, get a bigger data package since you'll probably eat through two megs rather quickly.
