GPS that lets you pre-program a route

Are there GPS that let you examine a route ahead of time, and then select that? For example, if someone isn't familiar with a freeway system of a metro area, one could select the route, and then they could drive and hear the directions to follow that particular route?

or is that not how GPS works?

Or do they all do this?

Sorry if this sounds bizarre, but I've obviously never used GPS before and so I don't know if this is available in all or not....

I won't disclose which GPS I use or how many but all let me put in the destination and push Go!. If I don't like the result I can put in waypoints or change the routing method. But NO GPS I know allows me to select a route from displayed routes.

But I can examine the route it made and on most, change it by either adding waypoints or canceling it and using another route method.

I can imagine some one would not like that and would not buy any GPS made today.
