adding SatNav maps Europe/South America

After 4 years being a very satisfied with user of a Garmin Nuvi 255 (2008), I'm about to buy my 2nd SatNav. It's a four years old unit, and I think it's about time to retire the poor thing. Since a couple of months, it takes ages to find satellites and also, I've broken the switch.
In principle, I had no doubt I'd be buying a Garmin. But I'm a Brazilian resident in Europe and I've tried to include Brazilian maps to my Garmin Nuvi (Western Europe)without much success, and now I was wondering whether any of you has had any success in downloading maps of other continents and making them work in your units.
Apparently, with the Garmin, it's not just downloading them to an SD card and plugging the card in, something else needs to be done.
Help would be much appreciated, as I'd love to be able to take the new device on my Xmas holidays.

BUT I had a little difficulty installing a new map and had to use the garmin forums. Fortunately the question had already come up and I will summarize it. I had to remove some voice files before adding the maps. After that it worked.

Sorry but I'd head to the garmin forums for install issues.
