Car Touch Screen Interface- No Anroid?

Since all of the touchscreen systems in all cars seem to be far inferior to an Android OS, why don't they simply put in an Android OS or modified Android like in the Nook of Kindle? Isn't Android open source? I would think it would be fairly easy and cost effective.

Does anyone have any insight into this?
