Hey guys,

so my car has an aux input and I need to buy an mp3 player that I can use to play in my car while I am on long drives. I just want a basic no frills mp3 player. I do not listen to music unless I am driving, so I don't need any fancy UI etc.

What is the best mp3 player I can buy, given my needs? Will every mp3 player work in every car? Do I also need to worry about the kind of cables I need to connect it to my car?

When it comes to MP3 Players, there is no shortage of inexpensive ones out there. It will really depend on your preference of how you'd like to manage your MP3 files and how you're comfortable transferring them from your computer to the device and the capacity of which you are looking. Some allow direct access like an external storage device... others require a conduit application to transfer the files (like iTunes with Apple devices). Remember most MP3 songs average 5mb each. So this will definitely have an affect of how many songs you can load on a device. The important factor is to get one with a headphone or audio output jack. Then determine what size input your Aux jack is for your vehicle. There are many different possibilities. They range from 2.5 mm mono (TS), 3.5 mm mono (TS) and stereo (TRS), and 1/4 (6.35 mm) stereo (TRS) jack plugs. Additionally you need to determine if your vehicle's Aux jack is also wired for a TRRS connector (center) for its headset (microphone and control button right). Some have this so you can plug your cell phone into your Aux port. In any case once you determine your Aux port requirements, you can then get a simple male-to-male cable to the length of your choice and you're basically done. Some optional items you may want to consider is a mount to hold the MP3 Player. There are some out there that also can plug into your car aux power port (if available) to charge your device during your drive.
