Headlights turn off when turn signal is turned on

When the headlights are on and the right turn signal is turned on, the headlights go off. They turn back on when the turn signal is turned off. When the left turn signal is turned on, the headlights stay on until the turn signal is turned off, than the headlights turn off. The car is a 97 mazda 626, 4 cylnder.

the controller inside the column needs to be replaced. Not for the faint of heart.

Turn signals turn off headlights

I would second the suggestion that you need a new control module. Doubt it will hurt anything driving it like this, but definitely not at night.
