Count me in. I had the blend doors repaired & it cost me $700

I am one of many with a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and a worsening problem with heating and AC. Windows fog up unexpectedly and heat turns to cool air intermittently. Rather then complain about these problems and expect Chrysler or anyone else to pay for a repair on my almost 10 year old vehicle with 170,000 miles, I'd like to ask if you plan to sue Dell or your computer manufacturer when your computer stops after 10 years? Do you expect things to last forever? One story I read from a Jeep owner with this problem said it cost almost $1700.00 to fix this problem correctly at the Jeep dealer. I don't deny that $1700 is a lot of money but, how much is a transmission to get fixed or replaced? $2500 to $3500. It seems we must make decisions here. Either pay the $1700 to the Jeep dealer for the right fix or buy a new car for $30,000. The bottom line for me is that my Jeep has never had a major engine or transmission problem and if I plan to keep it until theirs nothing left of it, I also better plan to spend some money on it for repairs. This vehicle has been great and has taken me so far back in the woods and off the beaten path many times without even a hick-up. Most other SUV's of this type would have left me for the wolves but the Jeep just keeps on going.
If you really want to sue someone, how bout Goodyear for their ever-popular exploding tires. 50 to 60,000 miles and KABOOM with no warning, no visible signs of tread wear or damage and proper inflation, tire rotation maintenance with no reason at all to believe these tires will fail. They rot from the inside out and can kill you.

i respect what you are saying but you dont need to take half the car apart to take out a transmission! we need some help!i am a step dad raising two children and i am a truck driver who leaves home for a couple of days @ a pop.not looking for a hand out but after saving to buy the jeep and now i have it for 2yrs i have to put 1200$ into the ac/heat?jeep needs to step in,remember they took the bail out (tax payer money)!the last time i looked thats your money.if someone from jeep gets to read the posts have a hart we didnt bad talk jeep we are just asking for some help!

I have a 98 Jeep and mine did the same thing. Did you ever do anything with a class action lawsuit? I filed a report about it as well. I assumed if enough people filed reports they would do something about it.

How can we have a successful Class Action Lawsuit? I've already taken the dashboard apart three times and I'm still trying to figure out why the actuators won't operate properly.

My brother has a 2002 Grand Cherokee that has dual heat/ac controls on the dash. One day the driver side stopped working. Dealer wanted $1500 to fix. We went up on Ebay and found a fix: If this is your problem, this may help and here it is: EBAY
FIX for common Grand Cherokee Blend Door failure Item number: 270320981195 and for $120.00 and an hours work, fixed it.
Note: You will no longer have 'real' dual controls (since the original separate heat/cooling 'doors' will be replaced by one door (vs. two) BUT, you will save about $1500.00 from the dealer.

My relative has a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited which has the dual control heating system. He also had trouble, but with his passenger side. He drove around with the passenger side vents all taped up. Until his driver side failed. He went on Ebay and found the two sites that sell the blend door repairs that you have to cut a hole in the heater box. He decided on the DUAL CONTROL - EBAY repair for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Blend Door problem Item number 330252333238 as that repair would let him keep his dual controls working like the original.
He also had trouble with his recirculation door. He decided on the NO dash removal fix, item number 330299950658 he said the repair was a little odd, but it did take care of his recirculation door problem.
This is another thing you might try.

Check engine light is on on my 02 Grand Cherokee. Can't get it through emission inspection! Codes were read a year ago which suggested a vacuum leak in EVAP system. Found a huge leak vacuum and fixed. Light has come back on. Problem now is nobody can read the fault codes. They either blink in an out to fast or don't read at all. CAN ANYONE HELP!

The A/C and heating problems in GC's is most often caused by broken blend doors, which control the flows of hot and cold air. The dealership usually wants a bunch of cash just to look at your problem, not to mention fixing it. If you search on e-bay for "heatertreater" you will find a DIY kit with quality components, and it's easy to install. Check it out if you don't feel like messing with the dealer fix.

I was wondering when one side blew heat and the other side blew ac what the problem was. My GC just started doing this yesterday and it is annoying me!

Good luck with the lawsuit. It's crap engineering. I have the same heating issue. Have you checked out the gearbox? I've also had 4 new radiators in last 2 years! Won't EVER buy another one and will tell everyone else not to. It's a shame because it's a joy to drive.

I have an AC in my '99 Grand Cherokee Ltd with a will of its own too. And things seem to be getting worse since they started about a year or so. Here are the symptoms (in order of appearance in my little):
- Sometimes when I start the car and turn on the AC to cool the air, hot air gets blown out of the window defogger or the leg vents.
- When the car has been parked outside (airport parking) for a few days and I turn it on and turn on the heater, only cold air comes out.
- If park the car for a shrt while (< 10 min) after having dirven it for 20-30 min with the AC on, the AC does not cool the air, but the heater kicks in and starts heating
- The newest one to appear: when I turn on the AC the driver's side ges cooled, but the passenger's side gets hot air (like really hetaed air at 80 degrees)
I guess it's time to replace the car and get a Japanese one (again). I never had any issues with my Toyota before.
