2007 Acura MDX - transmission and guel consumption

Much to say about this car, most good, although it feels like they have overdone some electronics and not tested all on real people (list will follow).
I have one major question and would appreciate if anyone has some insight:
When driving at 60MPH I take the foot off the accelerator and the RPMs hardly drop. It feels like the engine continues to pull fuel and "do something" when I would expect it to simply wind down.
Also, when driving between 25 and 30 MPH and take the foot off the accelerator the car shifts down brusquely, and it feels is as if I were driving with the parking brake on.
Fuel consumption is poor, regardless how carefully I drive.

Does this seem normal? Having driven many different automatics of all sorts of makes and models (US, European, Japanese and Korean), this is a first. It seems like the car is trying to do too much for me and definitely the wrong thing.

We will be reviewing the 2007 Acura MDX this week, and should have a review published by the end of next week. We will take a look at the specific problems you describe.

That said, many cars with six speed trannys will cruise at 60mph or above in sixth gear with RPMs running barely above idle. If you're seeing 2,000 RPM at 60mph, it's only going to drop down to about 1,600 RPM when you coast. The sixth gear is designed to save fuel. But if the engine's running at 3,000 RPM at 60mph, and it stays above 2,500 RPM when you coast, then you might have a problem.

I haven't looked at the tech specs for the MDX yet, but some trannys have 'smart' technology, and they try to adapt to your driving style. It may be that the tranny needs more time to learn how you prefer to drive, or is just guessing wrong.

hi,

Thanks for your thoughts on the problems.

You did not mention the quite severe downshifting at lower speeds.

I think all of this has an impact on mileage - over 1,200 miles we are not just above 14 MPG with 50/50 city and freeway driving, never above 60.

I look forward to the review. As I said, lots of good about the car.

Have a look at the information / nav / phone bluetooth / voice control system. The idea is not bad, but the whole thing feels like they skipped the user testing phase...

I just checked the MDX specs, and you're right, the MDX comes with a 5-speed tranny, which I find kind of surprising. When we test cars, we watch the RPM gauge pretty closely, looking for the engine speed when we're on the freeway and how it changes when we accelerate and decelerate. We get the MDX in on Wednesday, so I'll look for the problems you mentioned, including the downshifting.

I spent a lot of time in the MDX over the last week, and didn't notice any odd behavior from the tranny. On the highway, driving at 60 and above, taking my foot off the accelerator produced expected behavior. The RPMs dropped, and the car started to lose speed. It rolled along pretty well, but not out of the ordinary. At low speeds, such as 30mph, it didn't downshift or slow down extremely fast when I took my foot off the accelerator. It slowed down as expected, similar to other cars. I got a fuel consumption of 17.8mpg, with a hefty amount of freeway driving at speeds of 60 to 80mph.

Thanks for your feedback.
I will take it into the dealer next week.
There must be something wrong as my combined mileage after 1,500 miles (50/50 city/freeway) is still only just better than 14.
I look forward to the review.
What did you think of the handsfree, info system, etc.? Should it not be easier to manage / learn and intuitive?

YKnow another Acura model with consumption lower than that?
