"Certified" vs non-"Certified"

My wife and I need to buy our son a used car for college travel. We've pretty much decided on a 2003 Toyota Corolla LE. The dealer we visited had some "Certified" cars and some that weren't certified. They all had about the same mileage (40K miles). The non-certified comes with a 30-day warranty while the certified has a slightly longer warranty. The list price is the same, but the non-certified seems to have a more negotiable price. I could always buy an extended warranty for either. Is the "certified" used car worth and extra $1500? Wouldn't the dealer do some kind of review of the non-certified car too? Both cars looked, drove, smelled and sounded excellent. The dealer said I could have an independent repair person look at either car and they would fix anything within the warranty period. Any feedback would be helpful.
