The poll answers its own question. By forcing us to choose only one answer, it has forced us to take a very complex question and turn it into a "bite" of information. This is the major drawback of today's technology. It often limits discussions - turning a multilevel debate into hate/love, off/on, filthy rejoinder/cutsie approval, 600 character comment. All of the above apply, but I do feel we have lost the ability to converse face-to-face in a civil intelligent, look at all sides, manner. I miss the Jurassic period (before ATMs, computers, cell phones) but can't cope if my computer or phone are down for 5 minutes!

Users of smartphones (especially the phones with physical keyboards) reminds me of an episode of Star Trek TNG; Ryker had gotten back from Rysa with a "new game", turned out the more you played the game, the more addicting it became.
Everyday; I see folks wandering completely oblivious to their surroundings (texting), they are completely glued their phone/ tablet. Not only is this (possibly) dangerous, but it makes them more anti-social to those around them.
On a side note; I know from my own experience that when using my PC, I'd rather be on it, than doing anything else. Friends (years ago) told me to buy myself a PC, I responded that if did that, they'd never see me...guess what, they never see me.

Well i agree with the first person that commented you can't just pick one.Well and even if you could pick more than one every coin has two sides.As i am going to show you in my comments.
Smarter,yes computers have made us smarter as when we need the information highway we can find vast amounts of information for anything we need.When in our lives growing up,you had to call someone,physically go to whom or where or what you needed.Now that wealth of information is on your desk from encyclopedias to any reference you need.
Dumber this one i am going to have to say on the this i don't think it has.Again if you need information for prescriptions you take you can get all the information online.If you need to reference a vacation your going to take,you can.If your child needs help with homework you have access to any information you want.
Productive-not all i think we are loosing more and more productivity at work and in our lives with things like smartphones and mobile technology.I think mobile technology was originally geared for business and commerce.I wanted to get a smartphone,but decided against it.If i need to facebook someone i will wait till i get home and attach myself to my laptop.I see people at work who out of 8 hours spend 3 hours a day texting,and i see at least 3 people in my department per day per 3 hours on the phone texting.In this country we need all the commerce and jobs we can get,i seen a special on television where one of the ambassadors of oriental country,once said that we aren't taking jobs from america,thay are giving them to us even at a record we can not keep up with,and the reason that we are giving them to the oriental work force,because we are not productive and we are lazy.
Lazy-ahh i started on that in my last section,yes we are becoming more lazy with technology,if you want the best price on something,you went out and drove around and then went to the place with the best price,or you called;now you just shop online.You needed to have something printed a document or photos,you went to a business and had a resume printed,or you went to the local photo processing store,so yes we are getting lazier,and i am all against mobile device.Soon you will text someone and they will be right behind you,is mankind going to one day even after many of millions of years of evolution forget how to speak to each other or for that matter are we going to forget how to speak,soon you will be able to text a message and hit mandarin or chinese or german and the mobile device will translate for you.So you sort of learned other languages,but you don't even speak your fluent langauage anymore.
More social,highly unlikely unless you think sitting at your Xbox and playing with someone on the east coast when they live on west coast is becoming more social,it is nice to be on a site and email someone and talk to them about hobbies or interests that you share with others in different countries,maybe writing physically to each other would be a good thing to do to stay social.
Anti-social,yes as i mentioned before we are becoming less social.In time i am waiting to see someone text me and ask; where are you, i am at the mall and lets say im in Mcdonalds and they say so am I.Where i'm at booth 5 i'm at 6.You have a better chance of meeting someone online to date than you do in real life.We look for companions and soulmates with our eyes first.We are attached to each other at the hip with an infinite extension cord.
No impact-well you read above what i had to say,so yes technology has a good impact on us and a very negative impact on us too at the same time.

Here are my selections: (1) Dumber - the young person at McDonalds who can use a calculator, but cannot make change manually if the cash register isn't working. We don't have to think or reason because computers do it for us.
(2) Lazier - see #1. Why do something that requires brain power if your IPad can do it for you? No one can spell, use grammar or write a proper sentence. We are also lazy because we sit immobilized by the electronic device instead of moving around and getting exercise.
(3) Less productive - What is productive about spending countless hours playing computer games or being on Facebook?
(4) More dependent on technology - See #'s 1 and 2 above.
(5) Antisocial - We recently saw three different couples in one restaurant sitting across from each other using their smart phones at length. Both persons had no interaction with each other during their dinner out. One woman never looked up when the server was talking to her. She nodded her head and kept her eyes and hands on the phone. A restaurant in California is offering a 10% discount if you check your electronic device at the desk while you dine. I'm looking forward to "no-phone sections" in restaurants and other public places much like the no-smoking sections in the past before restaurants became totally non-smoking.
My own dear family members will use their smart phones while I am visiting and trying to have a conversation with them.
(5) This leads to an important "Other" - Devices and advances in personal technology are making us very unhealthy. First there is the addiction to computers and other electronic devices. This is being recognized in the medical community. I see this in my family members and friends who cannot put their devises down or turn them off. If a device beeps or buzzes or vibrates, they cannot ignore it. They are compelled to look at it and react.
And secondly, we are becoming very sedentary by sitting in front of a computer or other device for hours on end which leads to a number of documented health problems including but not limited to the increase in over weight or obese people.
I challenge CNET do more columns on the health issues in our society caused by use of computers and other electronic devices (and I do not believe in radiation from cell phones). Let's see more information about addiction to computers, health risks of sitting for long periods of time (Including in front of TV's), lack of exercise and being over weight or obese. I don't even want to think about texting while driving. I have actually seen a man texting while riding a horse down the road and recently a young man texting while riding his bicycle along a narrow road, weaving dangerously toward the center of the road and obviously not aware of cars. It is insane.
