Community poll forum: Which antivirus utility protects your computer?

I used to use norton, but when my subscription ran out, I changed to t-m. Right away I noticed my computer ran faster, it up-dates often and have not had any problems with viruses. I also use Spysweeper for my antispyware software.

Couldn't even wait for my subscription to end - just had to rid my computer of this bloated resource gobbling irritation. After what seemed like six "remove software" routines thru control panel, each with it's own required reboot, NAV is just a bad memory. Here was a company so full of itself it was unreachable by phone or email. Now one machine uses BitDefender (quite good), another AVG free, and another a test drive of Kaspersky.

I start Movie make and get a message that it must shut dowm. I sent the report a requested but the problem continues. I even downloaded Movie Maker 2 but still the same problem. What do I do since it worked fine for 2 years and have many movies saved under it but can't run it anylonger

I am using XP Professional v. 2002 with Service Pack 2 on a Pent 4 CPU 3.40 GHz and 1 Gig of Memory ( since I got the computer 2 years ago.)

Have several computers. Have used Norton for years. Recently wanted to try another one so someone talked me into Zone Alarm and put it on one computer. It works ok. Added a new computer to the group. It has McAfee. Seems to work all right so far. I still never know what any of them are really doing at times. But I have never had a virus or trojan horse or other stuff that we are aware of or know about. Hope we're not in a dreamworld. We keep all of them updated and scan more than twice a week. Norton gave me trouble with installation several years ago but we haven't had any problems with more recent years. Especially since XP came out. Before that it was hit and miss with all of them with M.E. Wow, I'm glad M.E. is gone. BTW, new computer has Vista Premium. Had it a week and everything works well. There was a problem or two with a couple of older of programs but went to software web site and updated them.. So far, so good. No big deal.
But watch out for some printer driver updates. they are hard to find on some web sites.

I have used Macaffee and Norton and believe they are both very good. With 20 years in the early development of PCs (1980 on), I believe Norton to be slightly ahead. So I now use Norton Int Security, Windows firewall (because the Norton seems to clash with something on my PC) and
I also use SpyBot-search & Destroy and Ad-awareSE because these catch the little nasties that slip past Norton.

I use Avast, simply because it was the only free AV that worked seamlessly with Windows Vista 64. Although I miss the scheduled scan offered by AVG, at least Avast worked. And worked as well as or better than Symantec or McAfee, without the outrageous price and update policies, and without the bloat that these two seem to entail.

I use Trend Micro, and the main reason I do is because of the countless times that it has placed in first or only second to BitDefender. I was a little annoyed by BitDefender, and frankly the same thing happens all the time with all anti-virus programs with the constant warnings about programs YOU know are safe. Anyways, Trend Micro is also the perfect amount of "user-friendliness" to make it helpful and useful, but not obnoxious. I started out with Norton, but I quickly realized that this program that everyone seems to settle for does not detect small viruses that Trend Micro removed when I installed it. The most annoying part of all was how slow and "dumbed down" the interface was. It seemed like they tried to make the program so user-friendly and happy looking that I couldn't even restart my computer without the program jumping into setting up filters, scanning without my approval, and just being there when I didn't want to see it. I think that McAfee and Norton are suitable for the average user, not one who actually wants to be highly productive on their PC.

I like the idea of protection being free.
I don't pay the government something as ARMY tax to keep the intelligence network going. I find the AOL Security Suite a fab. The Anti Virus engine and Firewall powered by McAfee are free. The Spyware and Adware products have already been free of cost. So the it appeals me to have AOL:'s McAfee powered Virus scanner installed on the desktop. Although it works only in the sage browsing world.

One, it is free, Two, it does not seem to slow down my computer, and Three, nothing has gotten past it for long, generally only one update away, mostly because I forgot, but now that I have satellite dsl, I let AVG update automatically.

Norton screwed up an old ME machine so badly a pro couldn't fix the hard dreive, or even get in it to reformat. If it's not too late, get rid of Norton and install Avast! or AVG.

I had always been able to rely on the trustworthiness of Norton and all of Symantec products. Between Antivirus, System Protection, Password Protection, System works, It seems that I have just about all of them so it seems. I tend to go with the flow of other major companies relying on it's ability to protect the giant companies like in the bank where I used to work. If they trust Norton then I will. Since I started to fully integrate my system to being overly protected with the latest security for my computer, I have not been bothered by spooks of any kind of hackers trying to break in to take a peek at what I have.

Antivirus software is usefull before Windows Update appear. Now the proper method to protech your computer is Windows Update and Microsoft Update with 2 seperate HDD(not one HDD with partitions). Don't forget to update all the hardware drivers and software patchs.
First HDD is for OS and programs, and the others are for data. Place My Documents folder in the second HDD. When you feel the system to slow down, don't waste any time trying to scan your system or fix the problems. Just format C: disk and reinstall the OS. Trust me ! This is the quickest and most stable method to get rid any problems.

I don't think a person can really "surf" where ever they want and remain safe..
I purchase the recommneded software for my OS and all seems perfect there..
I have curtailed my acticvities since my PC Projects take priority over Internet websites..
I use McAFEE Products..
since day one this company has been installed on my PC..
I have found its price even better than NORTON..
Except when AOL was having nothing but trouble/I really have no problems w/viruses or anything..McAFEE runs my PC..I have never had a problem--McAFEE even shut down my PC once when I was being attacked thru Messenger..I really just needed to drop AOL..and eventually did..since then MSN.com has been my ISP Provider..I still rely on McAFEE and don't expect to ever change..I have even lowered my McAFEE Product line..and my PC is running great..
