Community poll forum: Who do you predict will win the HD format war?

HD-DVD sounds a lot better than Blu-Ray. In comparison, HD-DVD sounds like a real format, and Blu-Ray sounds like a kid's marker for art and crafts.

But whatever; the dominant format that wins, wins domination. But the other will not be completely gone for a long while.

If its going to be a long battle and then it would be only fair if both formats co-exist. If there is to be one loser it will be HD-DVD, or they co-exist. I can't see how blu-ray will lose at this point.

I would just like to sound off by saying are you serious, your predition
is based on what it sounds like.Why don't you go over to IRAQ LISTEN TO WHAT IS GOING ON AND GIVE US YOUR STUPID PREDITION OF THE OUTCOME....

Neither format has an edge over the other, all I see is another way to get the public to spend money on systems much as it was with VHS vs Beta. Instead of working together to develop the best system possible thety end up in a P***ing cointest.

Maybe not from the web, but the news groups are already full of pirated DVD titles and some quality HD video. Right now it's mostly HD TV programs, but I'm sure when porn goes HD you'll be able to find it up there to download. The real winners will be hard drive manufacures...

About a year ago I remember reading that the worldwide porn industry has an annual revenue of about $80 Billion. I'd have to say that in itself makes it a major player in the decision-making process, although the article did not break out what percentage goes to porn video purchases.

Mathmatically speaking, that's equivalent to every man, women and child spending $40 a year on porn ... which we know doesn't happen that way. So that means there is a significant number of people making major purchases of porn materials, which in turn means that someone is paying atention to this group of consumers.

It seems to be a reality. We may not agree with it. It may even seem incredulous. However, facts don't lie. It seems that the adult entertainment industry is a huge factor in thia issue. Wh would have guessed? I was stunned.

We can't just judge a cover by the book behind it. We really should judge a book by its cover! And from the way things look, both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray has some good stuffing (and they both look good too!).

Since porn has been mentioned here, I'll use that as an example. There are many types of porn. Without being too detailed, I'll label two different groups as porn A and porn B. Some will hate porn B and love porn A and the others will hate porn A and love porn B. To make simple differences between humans, there's men and there's women (people are different, in other words). In terms of technology, some have a DVD player and some others have (and still use) a VHS player. Just as SOME people have and play an XBox 360 and others have and play a PlayStation!

The point is that there are two solid camps. One may be better than another in a specific area and the other better than the other in another specific area.

If there's technology to utilize BOTH forms of media (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray), that would be a better path. The end road is when one loses financially compared to the other. So this becomes a financial number game! Our votes just plays into politics; nothing more.

And since my computer rebooted due to spyware or something that seems to keep trying to steal my Windows Desktop Background for some mysterious reason, I don't know and don't have a bookmark as to the exact post I was replying to. Therefore, I'm sorry for having a confusing reply of "I Agree" with the above details that may not seem to match to what I'm replying to. (I'm just using my best guess.)



The debate is almost like "which will win, Apples or Oranges?".
They're both sweet and good. One has a red skin and the other is orange just like the name, they both cost money with Oranges being a LITTLE more expensive for random reasons, certain stores only carry one or the other, and the oranges are slightly larger than the apples.

In the past, there were regular VHS and S-VHS. A certain player was needed for S-VHS and it WAS better than VHS. Who won? They both became obsolete before an actual winner from what I think I know. LOL The point is, something better may actually arrive to the market before either can be declared a true winner.

I'm guessing that both will win. But if one wants to rally behind just one technology; they could buy a player and some associated movies to that player for themselves and as gifts to their friends and relatives! A REAL vote would be putting your wallet where your support is! hahaha YEA! (My support goes to the end winner and technology, whoever that is. I have plenty of beer to wait. LOL)

I agree that the porn industry killed Beta, it will also kill BlueRay.

If porn killed Beta, Sony would know this and wouldn't want to repeat that mistake again. So why would Sony not allow porn to be on blu-ray. Either porn didn't kill Beta (I don't think anyone in these forums actually know if it did) or porn will come on blu-ray. I know of one firm bringing porn on blu-ray. So maybe this info about porn not coming on blu-ray is false and was created just so HD-DVD fans had one argument to go on.

I've seen both demo'ed at local shops. The Blu-Ray seems superior on just a few things (already discussed) and does seem better "funded". BUT it really stinks, imho, at holding together (lots of "pixelation" and digital artifacts on several different set-ups I've seen). I haven't seen that on HD-DVD. But I also know that it is usually something other than "quality" that makes the decision. This is economics just like it was with VHS! Whomever makes the better economic choices will win. Did SONY learn the last of these wars? Their history of product development leads me to be very skeptical. Either way we win and we loose. I agree with the sentiment that it is too bad they can't cooperate and share the best of the best. Sigh! (They are both such improvements though- and both are WAY more expensive than necessary even predicting into the future). IMHO

Before drawing any conclusions look whats on the horizon! New Medium Enterprises {OTC,Bulletin Board NMEN-News} Jan 30th '07. "NME releases HD VMD Media Format to playback on ALL HD-capable electronic devices". Backed by Asian money they have already setup a distribution system and will start to deliver their high resolution, universal players and burners later this year.
This could revolutionize the DVD controversy if it becomes generally acccepted
