Harder crimes gets less time than what has been suggested.
Seizer of property (mothers home) like a drug dealer. Time on a scale of cost. Then there is parole where the person can be tracked by the cyber group and easily brought in on any suspicions.

The poll offered either-or choices. As with many other crimes, those caught and found guilty should be subject to a range of punishments: fines, prison time, probation following prison time, restitution, combinations of those. Virus writers should be fined. They should be improsoned. They should be held responsible for losses they caused to others-- even though they may not have the resources to fully compensate their victims for their losses. They should serve terms of probation after their release from prison (whether or not they were paroled) and one requirement of their probatin should be that they have no Internet access. In some cases, they should not have access to computers at all.

Cut off their hands and medically tidy up the wonds BUT afterwards they get no medical or finicial or any other kind of help. If they teach or have someone else write for them then cut their toungs out (same aftercare) and cut the hands off their assistant. Continue taking parts until the chain is broken.

Their fingers should be ballpiened. 4 fingers the first offence, 8 fingers the scound offence, and 12 fingers the third offence - Oops, that won't work - not enough fingers. Joking aside, has not anyone considered that they are actually mini-terrorists, getting satisfaction from terrorizing the international computer users community.

If there were no virus (and hacker, they're the same scum) threats why would we be concerned about security? Why would we be in worse shape than we are if there were none of these fools? It's useful in a sense that these people find flaws in the code, but they could do it without creating such havoc among people who NEED these machines to do really meaningful and important work.

Monitored probation, and be fined an amount depending upon their yearly income. Basically 3-10 times their annual salary would hurt, and most likely they would be so busy trying to pay their bills they would't have the time to do it again.

They should be executed for their crimes. Costing innocent people billions of dollars, legal bills, aggravation, wasted time, work stoppages and other damages... execution is what they deserve.

Here is the scenario....
A vandal goes from home to home, breaking in, destroying the victims computer, then leaving. Perhaps he steals a credit card or two along the way.

The police catch him.

The count is over 20 million homes, tens of thousands of credit cards, and millions of dollars in lost wages, and countless hours reconstructing finances, recovering lost data, and more...

The sentence? Let me start counting.
(BTW... the average 1st time burglar, one home, a thousand dollars in goods, is put away for a year)

Why shouldnt they be sent to jail. They unleash harmful code on the world, cost many people and companies millions or even billions of dollars and we should just give them probation!?!?!?!? Are you kidding me!! Even if there is no law against it, it goes against common decency to your fellow human being. You wanna mess up a computer, you hacking freak? MESS UP YOUR OWN AND LEAVE OURS ALONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First, require re-imbursement for all the IT hours spent cleaning up after their mess, worldwide.

Second, impose a minimum prison sentence commeasurate with felony theft. Didn't they "steal" productivity and time from every person affected?

Third, a lifetime with no computer or net access... we have to protect everyone from these malicious acts.

And I think I am being more than reasonable!

They should be sent to prison for five years and given ten on the bare behind when they go in and ten before they get out!
