Thread read/unread indicator

Each thread has a little colored circle in front of it.

Green...unread.
Red...read but a new post.
Clear...read and no new post.

Why do I keep seeing threads with a red circle but when I open the thread there are NO new post.

This thread must be edited or have spam removed quite often as the red circle appears often with no new post.

I've just been there to read the new post and found nothing there.

But that particular thread does seem to be a spam magnet. I've deleted a few spam posts from there myself.
