Why no edit post?

It would be a great idea to be able to edit messages once posted, no?

You can already preview, check your post prior to posting.
Also, since folk can reply to a post you wanted to edit, how to do this is full of problems.
Imagine the shenanigans some could play if one could edit after posting?
we got so many shenanigans in this forum but you got a point then.
Most other forums do not have this problem and allow editing after posting for valid reasons.
In fact, it has been debated for several years and made its way into the forum sticky - http://forums.cnet.com/7726-7598_102-3008818.html
The problems experienced in the CNET forums previously, as well as those that other forums currently experience, make an unrestricted edit feature a longshot at best. However, members are always encouraged to preview their posts before submitting, the option to reply to your own post is always an option, and we may see some very limited editing capabilities in the near future.
the main point for editing...
... mostly is missed spelling glitches or rewording for clarity reasons - you usually find out later when people have problems to understand a point.
That's something we will likely never see...
In my experience, correcting spelling/grammar mistakes and general other points of confusion are the most common, but also the easiest to work through - it is often easy to figure out the intended meaning. However, omissions of necessary information are also quite common, and replies to your own post often go overlooked by future readers when responding to you. That's something that would likely be addressed - the ability to append new data to your post rather than editing the existing content.
That's why I 'always' Preview first.
Every post I make, I preview before hitting submit. That way any errors I make, (and they are numerous), or any omissions, I get the chance to hit Edit and correct them.
That's not peculiar to these forums. Every forum I have ever used has a preview option.
Let me say about editing posts after submission. Here's a scenario I can envisage;
Poster 1; "I need help"
Poster 2 response, "Please tell us more so we can help you"
Poster 1 reply to that, "Don't be smart with me you idiot"
Poster 2 response, "Well if you can't be bothered to supply the information, we can't help".
Poster 1 now edits his first reply to read, "Sorry I forgot to add it, here it is".
In that simple case, Poster 2 now looks like he is being impatient and abusive. If Poster 1 sends an "Offensive alert" post against Poster 2, Poster 2 gets banned.
That is the type of situation why I personally am against posters being able to edit their own post after submission.
okay, well another thought...
We all know these threads where it takes one page alone to get the essential informations out of the OP let alone the waste of time when in different time zones - if editable the OP could add the essentials to his original posting and that way make it much easier for people reading first time.
well, we leave it to the admin - up to him but me thinks there are very valid reasons for editing
(NT) And that's a potential option being discussed...
Sometimes the poster would like to add some information to the original post that he or she may have forgotten at the time, or that they might have learned about not too long after posting. It does happen. In fact it happens to me. On top of all that most other forums have a way of editing posts, so it's proven that it can be does effectively.
It's not always for proofreading. Just Saying...
And if you need to add some information you add it as a reply.
but I never have this problem. I always Preview my posts, (I hit the Preview button), before Submitting. Then if I find an error I can hit Edit at the Preview stage.
And if I find further information I need to add, then I can add it in another post.
I have to wonder why this is so difficult for some.
Re-editing forum posts on C Net-
Most other forums do allow you to edit your posts, but you have a very short time to edit. That is there is normally
within 20-30 minutes of posting. But after that time, members cannot edit their posts. So I don't see why we can't have that here on C net maybe for a shorter time, say 10 minutes. The biggest problem with not being able to edit is if you make a spelling or typing error, you cannot edit to correct it. So allowing members to edit for at least a short time would help.
I hear you.
But it's not a feature you find here. Use the preview to check your post and if you feel you want the post deleted, use the TRIANGLE with the ! in it to let the mod's know you want it removed.
What can be done is to have everything you want to have edited next to something in bold saying "edit" followed by whatever the poster wanted to change. It's somewhat similar to replying to your own thread, but the benefit to this is that all the information is clumped together in one place.
