READ ME: Known Issues & Common Questions...

Before posting your question/comment in this forum please perform the following three steps:

2.) Review this thread. Information regarding known forum issues and frequently asked questions will be added to this thread from time to time and may address your question.

3.) Review the forum policies and FAQs. The Forum FAQs cover some of the basics of using these forums, ranging from emoticons and formatting to contacting other members, while the Forum Policies explain what is and is not acceptable.

FAQ: I want to delete my account...

CNET does not have a formal method of letting a member delete, or request the deletion of, his/her account. Instead, it is generally recommended that you unsubscribe from any newsletters, unsubscribe from any tracked threads, edit your personal profile if you wish, logout, and not use your account again. However, if you have a specific need to have your account deleted, you may click here and use the webform to request that CNET Customer Services delete your account.

NOTE: This will only affect your CNET membership, including CNET Forums, CNET Reviews, CNET News, CNET Downloads, and CNET TV. If you are a member of other CBSi-owned sites, such as last.fm, tv.com, gamespot.com, etc, you may need to unregister from them individually.

FAQ: How can I edit my own post?

Although frequently requested, at this time members cannot edit their own posts. The decision to disable post editing was based on:

1.) Abuse: Members who can edit their own posts can post--and have posted--derogatory or otherwise prohibited material and then, after it has produced the desired effect, such as offending readers, edit the comments out to make themselves look innocent of the accusations.

2.) Confusion: Members who can edit their own posts can cause--and have caused--confusion, advertently or inadvertently, by adding or removing information that others have already commented on in replies. The other members must then edit their posts in order for them to make sense in context.

3.) Workload: Members who can edit their own posts can create--and have created--additional work for the moderators by inadvertently forcing them reread each edited post to ensure that the new content is not offensive and is in full compliance with the forum policies.

Thus, as our forum administrator, Lee Koo, has said on the subject, "as discussed in the past, once history has been made--it sticks. So as it stands, it is very unlikely that we will ever allow editing of posts. I'm sorry and I hope you understand where I'm coming from."

FAQ: The forums are too cluttered and narrow - options?

The forums are a fixed width, leaving lots of 'dead space' on either side for those with large/wide-screen monitors. In addition, the recently-introduced social/rating aspects and some of the formatting changes are not valued by everyone. This, however, is changeable by using a custom style for the CNET Forums.

One such option is "CNET Forums - Clean and Wide," currently available for both Firefox and Chrome users with the Stylish browser extension. It's a personal project that I decided to share with all interested users, and might be worth a look if you like the forums but think some tweaking is in order.
