The cost of using some of those other forums is the same as here?? to me the puzzle is missing a piece.

Just take a look at those feature-rich vBulletin forums. I'd rather look at more ad banners than have to stare at these bare-bones forums.

You missed the point. No one said anything about paying to come here. There are forums just as free as here, but with features sorely lacking here. Just how costly can a few lines of code be??? You provide no clue to the puzzle.

Since search seems busted here's my quick overview from memory:

1. The forum had to mimic the look/feel of the top pages of cnet.com, etc.
2. Cnet has difficulty accepting open source solutions such as phpbb and other stellar solutions. Just like any other corporate beast, you'll have some of the staff demanding support. Since open source has no visible support staff or phone number, they can't buy in.
3. The bottomline is how much is some software to do the job and whether they can extend it with little or no staff.
