Audio Quality

Does the quality of a sound card determine the quality of the audio recorded?

Why not just jump in and get wet, if it doesn't work out then get something better. My setup is pretty average but I am satisfied as far as my audio stuff goes.

I have to get a new pc. I'm trying to decide between a desktop or notebook. It doesnt seem like it's possible to upgrade the sound card on a notebook very easily. Correct me if I'm wrong. So this leads me to think I should stick to a desktop which I can upgrade the sound card. The desktop I am using now doesnt create the best quality sound on either wave or mp3 cds. In the car it's fine, but at home I have a pretty high end home theater. I would like to be able to compile audio & make mix cds for home listening. But at this point I'd prefer just switching discs over & over rather than deal with poor sound quality. Obviously a copy is never going to sound as good as the original, but I guess I expect a litte better than what I'm hearing. So, does the sound card determine quality for mp3's also, or just when converted to wave format?

The bitrate a mp3 is ripped to determines the sound quality. A wave/cda file converted from a mp3 will only sound as good as the mp3 it was converted from.

I uploaded to music to my computer directly from the original store bought cd. Will the sound quality remain the same?

convert to wave or lossless compression (.ape or .Flac ) then yes it will. If you rip to mp3 or other lossy compression format, then no. Mp3 can sound ok, if you rip to a bitrate of 192 and above or use VBR insane setting, plus use the Lame codec. Just my opinion.
