Are free music downloads license free?

I've looked around but I don't think this question has been answered directly.

If an artist provide's a free music download to a song, can I use that song.... since it's labeled/offered as "free".... to use in a slide show presentation that I share with others?

For example. Lets say U2 offers a free download of a song somewhere. I go and download it and then I create a slideshow presentation with that U2 song. Then I want to post it on Facebook or You Tube.....Will I be able to do that with licensing or rights issues?

By the way I reference a big artist like U2 simply because I don't like the royalty -free theme music that is available on the net. I like "known" artists.

I just want to clear this up. I'm kinda new to this so please be paitient with your replies. Thanks

No, it's still copyrighted.

Still copyrighted in most cases.

And most I know of are for private non public use.

But it's still copyrighted to them and not under GPL. You'd have to contact them for permission to use it in anything
