novice asks: can I adjust 'sudio input' (?) when ripping cds

Real novice here needs help!!
Learning all I can about ripping my cd collection. I've about decided on FLAC format. Now . . some of my old cd's were bought via one of those music clubs (can't even remember the name now) and I know that when I play a 'club' cd and a store cd on my stereo, the 'club' cd is always quieter - which is annoying as #$% 'cuz - well - I have to keep playing w/ the volume on my stereo.
So . . . when ripping my cd collection - and perhaps more importantly - when playing my cds via my computer to my stereo (help w/ that appreciated also - haven't gotten that far in my research) - how can I level the input (?) of the sound so that all the music plays at the same volume? does this make sense?
Thanks in advance
btw: desktop pc Win 7 haven't bought/downloaded any software yet (e.g. flac)
