Transferring reel-to-reel music to computer

by flier_1 - 6/19/07 3:19 PM

Have several 1/4 inch reel-to-reel tapes with irreplaceable music. Wish to convert into mp3 files for recording on cd. Reel-to-reel is an old, but very workable, Teac 1230 deck, presently playing through a Sony receiver. Deck has red & white RCA output jacks in rear (connections to receiver) + 1/4 inch L and R Mic jacks and a 1/4 inch Phone jack in front. Wish to transfer music to a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop; this has one Mic jack, one Phone jack + the usual array of USB ports. How do I connect the tape deck to the laptop? What software do I need? In what format will the transferred files be? Will the stereo effect still be there? Must I stop the tape after each selection and save that file, then begin a new file? How do I deal with a classical music selection which can run for 30-40 minutes? Would very much appreciate any and all help, suggestions, tips, instructions, etc. Thank you.
