Am I setting my system up wrong?

I have a 3 year old 50" Vizio HDTV, a PS3 and a 2 year old Yamaha receiver connected up via HDMI. The picture and audio are quite good, no real complaints. I do not have cable as I rarely watch TV but I do like Blu-Ray's.
The problem is this: last month, for vacation, I rented a house in San Antonio and the guy had a smaller HDTV (Samsung, I think) and DVD player and cable. I was absolutely stunned by the picture, it was truly unlike anything I had seen before--so clear and...almost 3D (though he said it was not a 3D TV!). The people stood out and the clarity was unbelievable. I asked him what kind of special equipment he had to get such a picture and he said it was just the TV and cable,, though the cable delivered HD signal.
So it had made me think that perhaps I have something not set up correctly or some setting(s) needs to be adjusted. Any suggestions? If I need to provide further information, please let me know. The thing is that right now, I jsut don't know where to start.
Thanks in advance for any aid.
