Home audio question

I have 3 in wall speakers. One in the kitchen with a rotary volume control, one in the bedroom with a rotary volume control, and one up stairs without an independant volume control. The speakers are phoenix gold dual voice coil with a switch for 8 or 16 ohm. I have a stereo reciever with an A and B channel. I want to wire both downstairs speakers to one channel the the upstairs to one channel. When more than one speaker is hooked up to the reciever the reciever gets hot and I hear a clicking sound and the audio cuts out. This system is only for radio, ipod, etc. not home theater. I am sure it is wired wrong but am at a total loss as how to fix the problem. Any help would be great.
