Problem Playing DVDs -- Other DVDs Play Fine ...

I am hoping someone can advise me about this.
I purchased a set of DVDs of an old television series. I purchased them from Amazon. They are produced by Shout! Factory.
I have a Sony combination DVD/VHS player. These DVDs do not play in my DVD player. Well -- except for one! There are six discs -- one will play. I contacted Amazon, and they sent me a replacement set. The same thing happens -- one disc plays, but not the others. When I insert the others, it says "Loading" and then nothing happens, or I get a message saying the DVD cannot be played and to check the disc.
My other DVDs that I own work just fine on the player, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the player.
I tried playing them on my desktop computer. At first, the disc I tried would not play. I got a message about it not being the right code or region (I forget just what it said). Then it asked me (this is the Dell media player on my desktop) if I wanted to change the code/region. I clicked "Yes" and then the disc played on my desktop.
However -- these are Region 1 DVDs, and that's what I believe the Dell media player was originally set to.
And my Sony DVD player is Region 1.
Could anyone tell me why this is happening and if there's anything I can to do make the DVDs work on my Sony DVD player? I'm not sure if I want to keep them if they will only work on my computer.
And I don't understand why ONE of the discs in the set works fine on my Sony DVD player (in both sets that Amazon sent me), but the other five don't.
Also ... a few times, one of the other discs started to work, but then froze. Then when I tried it again, it didn't work at all.
Many thanks for any information or advice.
