LED v Plasma - need help picking a new set

So, after reading review after review after review, I've only succeeded in making myself second guess every possible decision.
Here are my needs/use habits:
HD cable content, via Comcast
~lots of sports. especially hockey and college football
Netflix HD streaming (currently via xbox360)
Gaming via xbox 360 (FPS, RPG, pretty much everything. muy importante)
The viewing area has lots of windows, but none directly behind or facing the TV and no direct sunlight ever hits the set. The area is generally on the dimmer side, with one overhead light about 13 feet away and 13 feet above.
The set I'm replacing is a 56" Samsung DLP that's been a workhorse, but the light tunnel is collapsing and the lamp finally went, and I don't think its worth replacing at this point, hence the search. The set is just on the reasonable side of the size spectrum for the viewing area, couldn't possibly go more, and a bit less prolly wouldn't hurt.
I'm trying to keep my budget between $1k and $1.5k. The sets that have become my 'top picks' are the Panasonic P50GT50 @ 1199.99 and the Samsung UN46ES7100 @ 1199.99.
I love that the plasma has the better PQ, but I've heard/read that they aren't great for gaming and can have burn in problems. Also the 3D isn't as good on the Panny, but I'm not sure how much I'll actually be watching stuff in 3D (plus the Sammy has glasses included, which is nice.) It's going on a tv stand, not a pedestal, and is heading for a wall mount at some point in the future. I've always been a Samsung fan, and most of my friends are fanboys, so I can't get an unbiased opinion from someone I actually know, and showrooms can't be trusted.
Any help would be awesome. I'm tearing my frickin hair out over here.
