As Bob hinted above, OTA (over the air), Cable or Satellite signals?

Prepare yourself for the expense involved if you absolutely must extend HDMI. It would be cheaper to extend coax IMO and E. Obtaining a second receiver might be a better long term goal for the secondary location if you need HDMI output for HD from a sat box, etc.

ive seen cat 5 cable supplement, some short range wi-fi transmitters/receivers, how does the optical work?

sorry, my intrest is to send a video satellite hdmi signal to another tv

1200. is another 3 times my tv budget, id really like to avoid the ditch too.

With optical you can avoid the ditch. If you run wire then you are inviting the usual lightning ground strike issues and blown gear. If you want wireless, I think the price is going up unless you go with simple OTA in your area.

the last question i can ask is what do we see in the future, will there be a push for longer range wi-fi? theres lots of inconvenient installations with older houses and incapable wiring, i cant see having 4 or more satellite dishes for distribution, it seems like demand would be pressing for more alternatives

HDMI data rates are many times that of today's WiFi.

I do own a wireless HDMI solution but it's not WiFi and only good for a short distance. You may ask why but my answer is the short one. FCC limits on bands and emissions.

Older houses and incapable wiring? Nope. There's plenty of ways already to install internet if you looking beyond the 'typical' home installation from the cable or satellite company. Ditto for bringing in weak cellular signals from outside.

As far as cable or sat goes though, many folks are willing to pony up for the second dish & receiver at the 2nd (& third) location, to be honest. They just often opt for a basic package at anything except the main residence.

Cheapest option for you would be to split the coax and send a signal (non-HDMI) to the second location w/ second box. (Yes, this means digging.) Just place a signal amplifier somewhere in between.
