Any suggestions on buying an HD DVD recorder?

We use OTA broadcasting which comes in through our DTV-PAL which we then watch on our Sony HD TV. We sometimes record programs on our DTV-PAL. I would like to know if anyone can recommend an HD DVD recorder that I can use to record programs I want to keep onto a DVD. I currently use a Panasonic DVD recorder/VCR combo to record my programs onto a DVD, but the quality suffers greatly because it doesn't record in HD. (As a side note, I still have family videos on VHS that I am converting to DVD, so if there's a recorder that will upgrade the quality of my VHS recordings by using an HD recorder, I would be interested in that also). Thanks!

Keep those SD recordings as is for best quality archival purposes.

It sounds like you would benefit from utilizing a PC to burn HD content from OTA sources. Blu Ray drives are quite affordable now, and can be bolted onto a very entry level desktop PC with 4GB RAM/Intel Core i3 chipset & video capture card (<$500). I would pop over to the PC-related CNET sub-forums on the particulars of how you can do this.

Question: are you *really* watching that many HD shows via OTA for which you would need HD recording ability(?)

USB flash stick or a SDHC card depending on their TV and save the files as MP4, most 'new' TV's can play that format.

TV capabilities

Hello, I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40V3000 TV. I'm looking at my manual and it looks like there is a USB port, but it says it's for "service only unless you are connecting the optional BRAVIA external module (DMex)." So it doesn't look like I can use that USB port as another drive to copy to. Also, I don't see a SDHC card slot. I can hook my PC to the TV, but I'm unclear how to use that as an available drive to write to because I haven't tried that before. Do you know if that would be possible to somehow write to the PC as I'm watching the program - or better yet, somehow select the program on my DTV-PAL and copy it to the PC? Thank you for your help.

You need a video capture card & software to capture to MP4

It would be more useful for you to post a question on how to achieve this in the other forums I mentioned above. There are external capture devices which can connect to your laptop via USB. Your PC probably is borderline specifications to be able to do this though. Boosting the RAM is probably what you would need more than anything, but inquire about this in the PC related forums to get the gory details.

Thanks for the response about the family videos. I will keep them SD.

And No, there aren't many shows I actually record to disk, but when I do, they are shows I would like to keep in their HD format. It's disappointing to watch the programs on disk (in SD) when I was used to the clarity of HD.

I do hook my PC to my TV via an HDMI cable (basically just to use the TV as my monitor) so I'm wondering, "Is there a way to copy programs from my DTV-PAL directly to my computer (maybe using my TV as a channel?)." That would be wonderful if I could, but the thought of trying to figure that out makes my head hurt. confused If you have any suggestions, I would appreciate hearing them. I have a Sony Bravia KDL-40V3000 TV that's only a few years old and a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 laptop that's probably 5 years old. Again, thanks for the help.
