How to get the best sound from a Yamaha Aventage RX-a720

I have:
Yamaha Aventage RX- A720 receiver
2 Energy CB-20 book shelf speakers
2 Energy CB-5 book shelf speakers
1 Energy CC-5 center channel
1 Energy C-8 sub woofer

The bass and mids are great, but the highs are not quite as clear and crisp. Snares, horns, cymbals etc. are kind of in the background not out front..

Please any suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for responding, I used the basic setup from the manual and i use the basic sound presets.

How are all the speakers arranged/placed?

Sometimes that plays a small part in which sounds in a big room are 'up front' more than others.

Keep in mind that a surround field will sound different than stereo speakers. More often than not, things are lost in the shuffle vs what we used to hear in stereo speaker arrangements.

What sort of audio settings are you applying via the Yamaha(?)

You're absolutely right.

The speaker set up is as followed:
Room size: unconventional, like a living-room and dining room together 9' by 12' by 16'

Along the 9' wall, is a 52" TV, CB-20s and the CC-8 (spread 6' apart) for stereo music.
Along the 16' is the CB-5s (spread 10' apart) for surround sound.

The only presets I use are:
2ch Stereo
7ch Stereo
Live/club, called The Bottom Line

All the others sound to echowee..
