New Insignia 50" 1080p 120hz HDTV only displays 60hz?

If anyone could please help me this, I would appreciate it. This is driving me nuts and I have found no answers on the web.

I just purchased and turned on a new New Insignia 50" 1080p 120hz HDTV NS-50L260A13.

When I change the input between the 3 HDMI, it says HDMI 60 hz, HDMI2 60 hz, and HDMI 3 60 hz.

Does anyone know why is happening. My signal is coming from my HDTV cable box, but it is 1080i and not 1080p. I also searched the settings on the TV menu and nothing specifies 60 vs 120.

Does anyone why this is happening?

The onscreen shows the signal source rate and not the panel rate. At no time have I seen any 120Hz output from or over HDMI. There are long discussions why but your 120Hz refers to the panel. Not the signal rate.

Thanks, so you are saying that it is still 120hz? I unfortunately do not know the difference between panel rate and source rate, but I would hope that it would show 120hz.

Are you saying that the panel rate is always 120hz even though it shows 60 in the display?

Do you have a link to those discussions?

Yes the panel rate is always 120 on a 120 screen.

Why? Because to do the tricks a 120 Hz screen does and more the panel is refreshed 120 times a second. The on screen indication is for the inputs. Imagine if it was the panel rate or showed both. 1. If it showed both then folk would ask why it never changes. 2. If it showed only the panel rate then folk would ask why they don't see the input rate.

So it shows the input rate.

And again, why 120? Because at 120 you can play 24p content. And don't be put off by those that want to debate "proper" 24p playback. I won't enter that discussion here.

Bottom line here is, 120Hz doesn't mean diddly squat, unless there's something glaring about the image quality the OP is experiencing on their new HDTV. That's what he should focus on. There is some helpful explanation surround this topic for the OP in the two following threads:

As noted above it's been beat to death (panel rate, input rate) etc.

It's something of a can't win situation on the on-screen display. Tell them what they need to know and they want more. Tell them everything and they complain it's too complicated.
