Home audio & video forum: Poll: Do you still buy DVD or Blu-ray discs today?

I admit with YouTube, Netflix or Amazon do stream in 1080p now for some content for a price of course. But that price difference isn't yet worth the cost differential for all movies. Although I can plainly see the difference, I only buy select movies or other content at 1080p. But even then if I had my druthers.... paying the extra for the BluRay version for me is always a better choice. I have several BD players.... one for each HDTV screen in the house. PS3 is excellent because of it's high quality and diversity. If Sony included a Google TV application it would be better though!

But I've found a cheaper alternative on ebay. That's basically like having a mini HTPC (home theater media center) than just a DLNA device like Sony PS3 or Xbox 360's, etc. Actually it's better when teamed with ordinary BD/DVD player.... because with latest Android OS installed on $50 to $60 USB/HDMI Module I have everything available all in one. I can stream from any streaming service, play any DVD or BluRay disc, stream HD content from SD cards and use/play games/applications on Android on my HDTV! ....w/ Android Jelly Bean installed I'm ahead of most of the hardware being sold.... even w/ Apple or Google TV on cost too! ....and big name manufacturers hate that! lol.... because it kills their "Planned Obsolescence Business Model" and worst company at doing this is Apple and they ain't ever going to get rich off me w/ LOCKING ME IN TO THEM!

I use DVD's on a regular basis for various purposes both formats and DL 's as well, I do not even own a Blu-ray player or burner. Since I will be building a new tower based on Win 8 I may incorporate a drive within the system, the vote is still out on that one.

I'm a sucker for absolute video quality for my viewing pleasure and have a long wish list of more movies to add to my collection, so, yes I'll be jumping onto the 4K bandwagon when it's available. I'll admit that for general movies, oldies and tv shows, I have Netflix.

Yes I still buy Blu-ray and DVD discs. Mostly Blu-ray.. only a DVD if it's cheap and a movie where the quality isn't that important (or old TV shows that might on be SD anyways).

I am not a fan of 'digital' (streaming or downloading) movies or TV shows. I like having a physical disc.. makes the purchase feel more meaningful. And for a movie that I will want to buy, I like to have it sitting on my shelf.

There are just too many negatives for me regarding streaming or downloading. Let me start:

-No Special features (I do enjoy the commentaries and behind the scenes videos)
-Audio and Video quality is lower (at least for now)
-Compatibility issues (many of the files I try to stream or download won't play on my computer or phone.. annoying!)
-Backup issues (hard drives will fail, so I don't want to have to worry about backing up my movies.. or losing them when the hard drive crashes)
-Not actually owning the movie (on some of these sites, you are basically just renting a license to the movie, and that can be taken away in the future. Maybe it won't be.. but if the company goes out of business or gets bought by some other company.. who knows what might happen to your movies)
-Some movies come with artwork or booklets.. you don't get that with the streaming versions

I was pretty excited about the promise of UltraViolet. Seemed like the best option. You can get a physical disc, and also streaming/downloading rights. But in actual use it's annoying at best. So many logins to keep track of, so many different websites and companies involved (It should just be the one main UltraViolet website and that's it). Also I've had problems getting the movies to play on my cell phone and computer. Thus I stick with Blu-ray.

While I might stream a movie that I really don't care about (renting it basically), if I enjoy the movie at all and want to buy it, I will stick with physical discs.
