Digital optical to tv versus av cable to receiver?

The Nintendo wii does not offer digital sound. I want to know the best possible method of allowing it to output the best sound. Would it be better to hook my wii up normally and have a digital optical cable running from my receiver to my tv? Or would it be better to hook up my red and white audio cables from the wii directly to the receiver? I'm using a wii component cable by the way. Here's a more in-depth explanation.

#1:
Video: Wii (red, green, blue) >> HDTV
Audio: Receiver (digital optical cable) >> HDTV

vs.

#2
Video: Wii (red, green, blue) >> HDTV
Audio: Wii (red, white) >> Receiver

Are you using built in HDTV speakers?

If not, why not run the audio to the receiver and be done?

I'm using 5 speakers and a subwoofer. I'm asking which option will create better audio quality.
