Dolby True-HD/DTS-HD Master Audio

I have a Pioneer VSX that will decode these formats, my question is, does the DVD need to have these formats or are they just "there" waiting to be decoded?

Not all DVDs have all audio formats. Look at the package to tell.

You mean Blu Ray

DVDs do not contain such expanded audio tracks, but Blu Ray discs do.

First, whether or not the disc is using audio compressed in one of these formats is similar to whether or not the disc contains the dubbing in Russian, Japanese, etc.; it will say on the back of the movie's box. So to answer your question, they *might* be there waiting, or they might not. Check the box or the menus within, once you've begun playing the disc. Second, these formats are specific to HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs, but we assume that's what you meant.
