Connect older Denon to Bluray

Hi I'm new. Before I buy any more cables or the Bluray can I connect a Denon UD M50 with only optical out or RCAs in, to a Sony BDS 590 with optical but no RCAs.
I'm assuming the Denon's out means no. I want to continue to bypass the poor speakers in the TV. Thanks

Clarification request: Will stereo do?

If so, why not connect like so?

BD player -> HDTV -> Audio out -> older Denon.

There are optical to analog things but in an optical to analog setup I worry about lip sync.
