Need recommendation for ~40" LED TV w/ good sound

Hello all,

My wife & I recently bought a 42" Vizio LED TV for a very good price. We are quite happy with the picture, however, we are going to be returning it because the built-in speakers are terrible. The sound quality is very tinny and dialog is hard to decipher.

I really need some recommendations in terms of LED TVs that have passable speakers. We'd like the bass & treble to be adjustable too. We're not too concerned with picture quality. As long as it's around 40", an LED display (can be 60hz; doesn't need to be 120), and has at least 3 HDMI ports, it's fine.

We would like to keep it in the $1,000 price range, but are flexible.

To be honest, most tv companies dont offer steller sound peformance out of the box. The majority of Hdtv's come with 10 watt speakers. If you are truly seeking good sound and great video quality for under $1000 here is how to do it. Purchase this 3d hdtv: UN40EH6030FXZA and this sound bar w/ wireless subwoofer: HW-E450ZA. The combo will set you back just under $750. I purchased the pair 11/20/12 at best buy black friday sale. Oh yeah the tv comes with a pair of 3d glasses so dont forget to buy a 3d movie!

why not just get a better sound system. If space is a problem then maybe a quality soundbar may be the way to go.

Thanks. We do currently have a sound bar, but we don't like having the extra electronics equipment. There's no good place to mount it on the wall, and if I just set it in front of the television, it blocks the TV's IR receiver. We currently have it in back of the TV, which might be contributing to our problem with dialog. We also have a pretty open living room without a lot of furniture & a high ceiling which might be screwing with the acoustics.

Personally, though, I think the actors on "Homeland" need to stop mumbling their lines sad

Btw - We tried the new Bose Solo, which was essentially perfect, but there's no equalizer controls on it. I loved it, but it was too bass-y for my wife, so we returned it.

Seriously though, it would help if you had more realistic expectations about sound quality from fixed angle, built in HDTV speakers. And that goes double for Bose and the majority of soundbar systems- they're overpriced(!)
FWIW, you need to locate the soundbar (or any other speaker) so it does not block the IR of the TV. Yes, high ceilings can muck up the acoustics, which is why you really would benefit from a full fledged set of surround speakers & AV receiver. This way you get all the proper and likely necessary adjustments. Let the HDTV do what's it's best at- displaying video content.
With a proper sound system, you will start to hear those actors again wink
