Recommendations for home audio system

I'm looking for some device for listening to music at home but I don't really know where to start. Everyone I know just uses iTunes or Spotify on their computer, hooked up to some decent speakers maybe. The problem is I can't stand this method of consuming music. Normally if there's a moment where I want to listen to music, I just want it to be easy. My computer might not already be on, or I might be using it for something else and don't want iTunes running in the background distracting me.
What kind of home audio systems do people use these days that are separate from their PC? Surely the idea of a full hi-fi system is a bit outdated? I feel like an ipod dock with a built in radio is what I need, but is this sort of set up a bit technologically backward now?
I have found a number of iPod docks that are clearly designed to be more up to date and "connected". Features such as AirPlay, and internet radio streaming over wifi for example. Is this the kind of thing I should be looking at?
I'm in the UK and my budget is up to £150.
