Greetings

I have tried to find websites to help me understand how to do what I want to do . . . but there's just too much technology and I haven't kept up!

I have two dilemmas:

1) I do not currently own a TV. I watch major networks (cbs, abc etc) via internet on my desktop computer, which is currently located in my living room. I need to move my desktop to my office; but still want to watch major networks via internet or netflix (have subscription) while relaxing in my living room. I do not want a cable tv subscription - I just don't watch that much 'tv'.

2) I am in the process of digitizing my music collection (on my desktop computer). Once complete, I want to play my music on my stereo (also in the living room) - I think I've figured out the software I need for my computer (exact audio copy for digitizing; foobar 2000 - or similar - for replay). Do I need to physically wire or can I stream wirelessly to my stereo (slingbox?). And, I want to hook up the new TV or computer monitor (the one I'm going to watch internet shows/movies on from Q 1, to my stereo.

really don't want to spend a fortune on a new 'smart
tv - just want something basic - either TV or monitor - maybe 30" ?? or smaller.

(btw: I have an older computer sitting in the garage if this will help me - I think it runs Win XP. Now, to be honest I do know something about computers - recognizing that this old system may need a new video card and/or wifi capability)

How do I find someone locally to tell me how to do this? am not too impressed with what I see on Craigslist. what type of technical person am I looking for? Seems I need someone other than a computer techie - they just kinda stare at me!

Even @ CNET forums, there are some very detailed tips on the 'how to' portion of many gizmo-focused tasks wink

It's just a matter of acquiring your knowledge slowly regarding the various steps involved, and hopefully, doing some reading on other sites/forums to verify what you are hearing is actually what you need based on your particular situation. Craigslist, especially nowadays, is the absolute *last* place I would ever search out someone to potentially fleece you of your hard earned money. Better would be to find someone word of mouth, or via something akin to 'Angie's List', instead of blind via Craigslist, etc.

We could get you started here with some basic options to consider. Before doing that, It would help to know exactly what your budget is for this project, and whether or not you would consider buying a modest sized HDTV to make things easier, and knowing more specifics about each computer & stereo component you already own. The more details you provide, the better, especially before you start throwing things like Slingbox or streaming media players into the mix wink

Thanks for the support. Perhaps I don't "need" help, but I "want" help! I have too many other things on my plate demanding my attention and something has to give! I'm too far behind the 8-ball w/ technology and have the least interest in this task!

After I posted this, it started to make more sense to me. Sometimes I just need to lay it all out! since I have an old computer with a reasonably current OS - Win XP - it seems like I should just clean the hard drive and use it as a 'server' of sorts: I can put my music collection on it - with Foobar 2000 (or some other program) and connect it to my stereo. Question here is: do i need new components - need a computer techie to help out. Second, if I use the old computer, I just need a new monitor (and video card?) - install a newer version of IE or Firefox, connect the computer to the internet and watch all the internet TV I've been doing with my desktop. I'll have to pull out the old computer and really look at it - it was my dad's so don't know anything about it - except it ran Win XP.

Suddenly it's all coming in to view!

Now - where do I go to find a reasonably knowledgeable computer techie - I don't mind paying for this help!

btw: I have an 'old' Denon DRA 395 receiver. Decent enough for my task. I don't need the 'latest and greatest'.
