Best DVR for today's changing uses?

Hi,
I have an old Philips DVR that needs upgrading and I want a DVR that can cover all my uses. Like a lot of people today I have cut my cable provider and instead use a host of internet based services and my Over the air HD antenna. Is there something out there that can accommodate without a monthly fee just like my old Philips so that can record from my HDMI sources without breaking he bank? Stand alone or PC based?

HDMI recording is, well, complicated.

Almost all HDMI output is encrypted and hard to record. Did you find BLACK MAGIC HDMI recorder devices?

I can not discuss getting around the copy protection the industry went with here. So this is about all I can offer.
