Do any entry level 42" LCD TVs support 1920*1080 VGA input?

I recently bought a 42" Panasonic LCD TV (TCL42U5) with VGA input. I assumed that I would be able to use the VGA input with a 1920*1080 resolution setting on my laptop and that it would display nicely on the new TV (fill the entire screen without any black bars.) The manual for the Panasonic is a piece of garbage and doesn't include the list of compatible input resolutions. As far as I can tell from experimenting, it doesn't support any 16:9 options!!
So I did some more research and found a model from Sharp that was about the same price and the online manual explicitly stated that it would support 1920*1080 when using the VGA input (LC42SV50U.) I went to the store with a laptop and when I switched it to 1920*1080 the TV said "NOT SUPPORT" It did take 1280*720 (an improvement over the Panasonic,) but it compressed the image with bars on the top and bottom and the salesperson said that they could not be removed.
Am I doing something wrong? Perhaps a problem with the laptop? It seemed like a given to me that an HDTV (which has a native resolution of 1920*1080) would properly support that resolution from the VGA port. Are there any models in that price range that will give me what I need?
Thanks for any advice!
