Trying to fix speakers by replacing broken 3,5 mm jack

Hello, the 3,5mm jack on my small 2.0 speaker set broke. So I am now trying to fix this by replacing the 3,5 mm jack by one from a broken headset. The first problem I encountered is that the wires from the broken headset seem to have a special coating instead of plastic like you would normally expect. I tried burning this off but the wires get black from this. After some cleaning I can somewhat see the copper again. After having done that I wire it all up, no soldering yet. But when I try to play music it is very distorted. Can anyone help me with this? Maybe I need to use other wires which have plastic instead of some coating?
