Surround Sound Receiver sound only through 2 speakers

I have a brand new Pioneer VSX-1022-k receiver hooked up via HDMI to a brand new Panasonic Viera Plasma TV. Whether I am trying to watch TV or a Movie or play music, I am only getting sound from the Center, Front Right and subwoofer speakers. Seems like it must be a setting issue somewhere, but I can't figure it out. Help!!

What is your setup? What are the sources for the receiver (cable or SAT box, BR or DVD player) and how are they connected to the Pioneer. Do you have the HDMI from the receiver to the TV input? How many subwoofers do you have (2?) or do you mean 2 surround speakers? How many speakers do you have?
Did you make sure the surround speakers are connected to the correct speaker terminals -- not to surround back but to surround? Did you read the manual speaker settings on pages 47 and 48? Did you try the auto speaker settings (MACC) to see if there were any test tones coming out of your speakers? How is the subwoofer connected (speaker wire from main front speakers to subwoofer and then wired to front speakers or a single RCA cable from the sub out on the receiver to the LFE in on the subwoofer)
Sorry for all the questions. I have a Pionner Elite SSX 33 and it can be daunting when first setting it up so I can see where you may have problems.

Getting sound out of the Front Right but not the Front Left suggests:

a) Some of your speakers are broken or not correctly hooked up OR
b) The speakers are, maybe, 4ohm speakers and outside the range of the receiver? There's a label on the back of AVRs that lists impedance ranges.
c) Your using damaged speaker wire
d) The receiver has problems out of the box?
