Home audio & video forum: Skype conferences via TV or HMD in high-res

I didn't find that feature so be sure you have this before you spend one dime.

It does not have to be via Skype or even in HD. Thats just what came into my mind as the best solution.
But it should have an above average resolution and should be easy-to-build.

I would be guessing you want to plug this into that and do what others do without all the work. I don't want to upset you but something's amiss here. I wonder if you could reveal what you found that worked and what is driving you to make a new system without the engineers, programmers and more.

Again, I'm guessing here you are trying to sling together something without doing the engineering cycle. Maybe hoping something that does not involve a PC or is lower cost. I'm left to guess this.

My background is in the design, development of many things including video surveillance. Along the way you meet folk that want the 99 dollar or no engineering solutions. Sometimes they won't tell you this but it's becoming clear you want something but are trying to get around the usual work.

As it stands you want a PC running Skype or one of the Cisco systems.

I can hardly put you wrong and do understand your concerns. In the end it comes down to what sum you are able to invest. If I can use some ready-to-use systems whiich will work for some months im fine.
The idea is definetly not to build something which will run stable for years.
Engeneers do premium work, but are very expensive, especially if your not from a company

Thanks thats a good point to start the math I have to build such a system for a scientific study with about 30 clients, but I think their wont be situations with more than 6 clients in a conference at the same time.

Any Ideas about the hardware I need to get?

Skype works at about 5 to 10 users so I'm guessing here you are attempting to create something better.

Let's go down that road as an exercise in product development. It's possible you don't want to use a PC but a single board dedicated box. Today's NRE figures put such a work at about 1 to 10 million USD so are you sure you need to create such a thing? Will you get your money back?

So why not the usual Skype setup or the system Cisco sells?

The usual Skype-Setup seems fine. I think 5-10 at the same time is enough to start with.
The only downside so far, is that you seem to need to buy a special TV sets for every client. But thats of course still a hell lot cheaper than the numbers you mentioned.

Any old HDMI TV seems fine. Then we use the usual laptop, skype and broadband connection.

Cisco has systems that compete with such a thing so for it to run for years, you'll go with Cisco.
