If you want active 3D, I would recommend a good plasma, as they generally seem to have better PQ, from my experience. Specifically, as JimmyFukyushu mentioned, Panasonic plasmas.

If you're going to for passive 3D, LG seems to have the edge on passive 3D technology at the moment.

Your post sounds me interesting; in fact I must say it's a nice thought to watch Olympic! I won't recommend you active 3d for doing same but yes, passive for sure. You might have some trouble in active such as headache, eyestrains, flicker etc due to its bulky 3d glasses while, in passive 3d you would enjoy you programs flawlessly. LG have many LM passive models try out them, they are considering as the most recommended option in class.

3d TV for London Olympic...Better if you go for passive instead; active shows flicker or crosstalk due to heavy & expensive 3d glasses, you won't be able to enjoy your sport programs for long time with full comfort as those glasses do need charging as well after a certain time whereas, passive 3d glasses don't need any electronics to run, they are light weighted & comfortable for long time, no flicker or crosstalk etc. LG has few 2012 launched LM series passive models all carries six pairs of passive 3d glasses. Check out one which meets your expectation.

I saw couple of sporting events on my brand newly bought LG Smart TV with their 2D to 3D converter. It did a good job, but I preferred to watch the games in regular HD. Since the events were filmed in 3D, it was nothing crazy, but the HD quality was very good.
