We have frequent power blips and it is so aggravating to wait for the satellite box to reboot in the middle of a show. I have an APC that I got at walmart for the computer, is that good enough for the tv? I have a 42 inch plasma with a directv dvr. Thanks Sue

Power conditioner or long run outage??

If dropouts and blinks of power cause the sat box to reset, a small box, 300 VAH would filter nicely but wouldn't power the unit for very long. To keep things going longer you need to total up the wattage of the sat box and the TV (plasma units draw more than LCD or LED types) to get a total and this is almost one for one with VAH ratings. So a 1,000 VAH UPS unit will keep 1,000 watts of equipment running for one hour.

APC/battery back up

It would depend on the capability of the APC as to whether that might be the resolution but I am not sure if Wal-Mart carries an APC geared to the task. Typically electronic box stores such as Staples/Fry's and likely Office depot would, they are NOT cheap, it would be best to do a bit of research prior to purchasing an APC unit, there are a lot of variations.

Places like Staples and Office Depot are going to run a bit more money but carry the more dependable brands with superior performance as most of their customers are businesses and represent over 75% of their sales. Fry's will offer a much wider selection and a bigger range in prices and sizes. I use a 1200 VAH unit to keep a server running for up to three hours. It uses gel type battery cells and are easy to replace when they get old. I test the unit for one hour each month and it does a very good job of filtering and smoothing besides the backup power.
